Chemical modification of clay minerals, sorption of anions on modified clays

Bentonite clays are widely applied as natural geological and engineering barriers of waste disposals because of their great abundance and desirable isolation and sorption properties. These substances are planned as barriers in geological disposals of high activity nuclear waste. The main mineral component of bentonite is montmorillonite, having negative layer charge, can sorb cations, inhibiting their migration. Chemically modified bentonites can sorb anionic radionuclides of nuclear wastes (36Cl, 79Se, 99Tc, 129I). Moreover, phosphate and arsenite concentration of natural waters can be decreased in a similar way.  We study these sorption possibilities and the changes in the crystal structure during the chemical modification.
